About Our Process…
Our fused glass creations are one-of-a-kind pieces hand crafted by our resident artists. The multiphase process of fused glass begins with design where the artist decides the specific pallet of colors, textures, and appearance for the composition. The artist also considers the effect the piece will have such as tactility, transillumination, and representation. The artist then constructs and assembles the glass components combining form, function, and artistry to each unique piece.
Science also comes into play when working with glass. Certain glass colors are created by incorporating various chemical elements such as copper oxide, cadmium sulfide, manganese dioxide, and gold. When combining colors, reactions can occur creating dramatic effects.
Other considerations when using assorted colors of glass are the coefficient of expansion (COE) and viscosity characteristics of colors and types of glass used. Glass artists need to understand the COE of glass being used is imperative to ensure the various glass types used have the same molecular structure and are compatible with one another. Knowledge of the glass viscosity for each color and type of glass is important because the characteristics of disparate glass pieces have a differing rate of flow or melting stages at various temperatures.
Glass is neither a true liquid nor a true solid — it has properties of both, but it’s its own distinct state of matter. The technical definition is that glass is a nonequilibrium, non-crystalline state of matter that appears solid on a short timescale but continuously relaxes towards the liquid state.
The kiln is a key factor in transforming glass into art pieces where temperatures can rise to 1500 degrees Fahrenheit. This process is generally done by slowly heating the glass to the desired temperature and then cooled to a maintaining temperature at what is called anneal where the glass stabilizes at 900 degrees Fahrenheit for a specific period of time depending upon the thickness of the glass piece. Each firing can range from 15 plus hours up to several days. Often, a single piece can undergo multiple firings in achieving the desired outcome and form of a creation.
Our supplies and equipment are sourced by Portland Oregon based companies such as Bullseye Glass for our materials and Skutt manufactures our kilns. Most of the molds we use are hand crafted and imported from Creative Ceramics, a European based company producing the finest slumping molds available.
